Should I Limit My Activity? Can Exercise Help?

If you have arthritis, it is important to keep your hip joint mobile. Over time, the arthritis will progress. Your hip will feel stiffer and you will lose range of motion. It is therefore helpful to try to do everything you can to maintain the range of motion in your hip. You will walk better and be able to enjoy more of your regular activities and sports.

A good exercise program will help preserve both the strength and the motion  in your hip. Strengthening the muscles around your hip and thigh can take some of the pressure off your arthritic joint.

If you are planning surgery, strengthening the muscles around your hip will make your recovery easier.

Staying active is an important part of living with an arthritic hip. There is no evidence that limiting your activity will stop the progression of arthritis. Let your pain and level of comfort be your guide as to what you can and cannot do. If you have any questions, a physical therapist can help you set up a regular exercise program for your hip.
