Are The AREDS Vitamins Helpful To Those Who Do Not Have Evidence Of Macular Degeneration?

At this time, there is no evidence that the AREDS supplements are protective or beneficial for those without evidence of macular degeneration. Family members of patients with macular degeneration often ask if taking the AREDS supplements will help protect them from developing macular degeneration. This benefit has not been demonstrated.

Patients who entered the AREDS trial with early dry macular degeneration experienced progression to intermediate dry disease without evidence of slowing. Therefore, the AREDS supplements are not recommended for anyone who does not have at least intermediate age-related macular degeneration or evidence of wet macular degeneration in one eye.

A reasonable precautionary step is to eat a well-balanced diet with green leafy vegetables that are high in antioxidants. In addition, lower amounts of antioxidants are typical components of daily multivitamins.
