Is Age-related Macular Degeneration Truly Age Related?

If So, At What Age Should We Be Concerned?

The risk of age-related macular degeneration and sub-sequent visual loss clearly increases with age. The risk of visual loss in patients under 50 years of age is uncommon. From 50 to 60 years of age, it is unlikely, but data show that the risk increases significantly in those 60 years and older. The risk in people 50 years of age or younger of developing any type of macular degeneration is 2%, but this risk increases to nearly 30% in those 75 years or older.
