Are There Any New Developments For The Treatment Of Fibroids?

One of the newest methods of treatment is called magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRGFU). This procedure uses high-intensity, focused ultrasound waves to destroy the fibroid. The benefits of this procedure are:

1. It is noninvasive.
2. No surgery is performed.
3. There is no bleeding.
4. There is no pain.
5. If it is performed as an outpatient procedure, the patient may go home after it is done.

The procedure requires the patient to lie face-down with her abdomen on the ultrasound scanner. The ultrasound scanner is then placed underneath the abdomen and directly below the fibroid. The ultrasound beam is then directed through the wall of the abdomen directly into the fibroid. High-intensity ultrasound energy directed at the fibroid heats the tissue and destroys the fibroid.
