A pelvic ultrasound, performed either abdominally or transvaginally, is the gold standard for confirming the diagnosis of uterine fibroids. The ultrasound is used to determine the location, size, and number of fibroids. The ultrasound, performed repeatedly over a number of months, is also useful in monitoring the rate of growth of uterine fibroids.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is another useful tool in the diagnosis of fibroids. Computerized tomography (CT) scan has also been used in the diagnosis of fibroids.
