What Is The Relationship Between Fibroids And Miscarriages?

Several studies have shown a direct relationship between the presence of uterine fibroids and a significant increase in the rate of miscarriages. Submucosal fibroids, and to a lesser extent intramural fibroids, have repeatedly been implicated. One study in particular, which reviewed published reports from 1957 to 1970, showed a significant lowering of miscarriage rates from 41% to 19% in women who had surgical removal of the symptomatic fibroids prior to attempting conception. Essentially, myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids) significantly decreases the miscarriage rate.
