Does Lutein Help To Prevent Macular Degeneration or Its Progression?

Many of the over-the-counter eye supplements advertise the inclusion of lutein. Does lutein help to prevent macular degeneration or its progression, and should I take it?

Lutein is a pigment in the macula that along with another pigment (zeaxanthin), is believed to protect the macula from damaging effects of blue light. Lutein has been the focus of studies over the past several years, the majority of which suggest a benefit with regard to decreasing the risk of macular degeneration. The recommended dosage is 6–20 mg/day.

Lutein can also be obtained in one’s diet. It is present in green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, collard greens, and broccoli. It is also present in relatively high amounts in corn. Studies demonstrating a causal relationship have not yet been reported. AREDS II is a current clinical trial evaluating an antioxidant regimen with and without lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids.
